WHAT MAKES AN EFFECTIVE TRAILER?

The main purpose of a film trailer is to inform the audience and therefore potential customers, about the film. There are many ways in which they can do this depending on what type of film they are trying to promote. Films with different genres e.g. action, soap, horror, comedy etc will each be portrayed and 'sold' to the audience in their unique ways as to entice their target audience. Another main purpose in film trailers is to leave the viewer with a feeling of anticipation and the urge to want to see the film.

This is very important because it puts the audience in the right frame of mind for viewing the trailer. For instance the 'Triple X' movie trailer incorporates fast paced camera shots, a gnarled fistful of explosions, array of guns and evocative, nonsensical one liners; all the trademarks of your average action film. But with no soundtrack the whole effect could not be achieved. The music incorporates a range of extreme dynamics including loud, crashing fast music for scenes of action and slower, more sedate music for dialogue. The music is very effective in establishing the most appropriate mood and tone. Even without visuals - a definite mood can be created through the choice of music types and instruments; in this case a raw, rusted and metallic feel is created by the rigid and sometimes discordal pattern of the guitar playing. In order for film companies to reach their Unique Selling Point, they will need a large audience so that they have the potential of gaining much profit. Some films have different trailers that each concentrate on aspects of the film in order to appeal to a larger audience.

And now..

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN OPENING SEQUENCE AND A TRAILER:

There are many differences between a trailer and opening scene of a film. A trailer is a clip of different shots and scenes from a movie, it contains the most attractive and enjoyable scenes from the actual film that is going to be released. A trailer comes out before the film and it is very much like a montage and is made to try and persuade the audience to go and pay to watch the whole movie. It is a clip, which is condones the movie it will contain many types of media technique aspects such as sound, different types of camera shots and so on. The big difference is a trailer is more compact and contains quick shots and summarizes the film but leaves a cliffhanger. An opening scene contains the credits of producers and the makers of the film; this is so the audience slowly gets into the film and the atmosphere of it. A trailer summarises the film however it does not show the possotive equilibrium at the end of the film, it stops when the bad at the thrilling and bad part.
